Ft. Myers - Day Five - Twins Baseball!
More Baseball and Six Mile Slough
Today was our first scheduled Twins game, and we were excited to head off to Hammond Stadium for the Twins game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
But we also wanted to get to a nature area that Pat and Kathy found last year during their trip. Six Mile Cypress Slough is a great wetland preserve with a boardwalk through the area. The park contains a large number of native species, including alligators, snakes and birds.
We headed to the slough for a pre-game walk through the wetland. We wandered for a couple hours and saw birds, anoles, spiders and even a distant alligator. It is such great piece of wilderness right in Ft Myers.
The slough is pretty close to the Twins training complex, and we headed to the stadium about an hour before game time. Followed a car with Minnesota plates and parked right next to them. We were all very surprised to see an older couple in Cardinals gear get out! We joked with them, and the gentleman said he had spent most of his life in St. Louis but moved to Minnesota a few years earlier.
They were not the only Cardinal fans at the game by a long shot - easily half the crowd were there for the Cardinals. Despite that we had a great time. Randy Dobnak was the starter. Our seats on the third base line gave us a great look at Josh Donaldson.
Midway through the game Jenny began getting dizzy again, and ended up passing out in her seat. Was out for a little bit and bounced back quickly.
Around the 7th inning, a Cardinal fan got the attention of the Cardinal third baseman and called for the ball after a 3rd out fly ball from Nelson Cruz. Pat nabbed it right in front of him, for his first ever ball at a game. Despite some gentle teasing from the Cards fan that the ball was aimed his way, very little guilt was felt. Pat briefly looked for a kid, but thankfully could not find one!
After the game we headed back to the hotel, dropped Jenny off and then Pat, Kathy and Robert headed to Ft. Myers Brewing, Pat’s favorite Ft. Myers brewery. We ran into fellow Robbinsdale-ians Nick and Sue Sobiech and Sue’s brother and wife. Small world.
Grabbed some pizza from a great food truck, and a couple beers. All is right in the world!
News of the Corona virus hitting the US was starting. The NBA season suspension was floating around as a rumor, and the news from Seattle was starting. Rob mentioned to me was thinking we might not get our Wednesday game in. I had been thinking the same thing. It was still early in the cancellations, but they were starting.
